Dr Marco wiped the sweat from his brow as he leaned over his work desk. Carefully he added the last touches to the tiny lenses he was making, before placing them into their covers. The doctor smiled. Staring back up at him was a perfect pair of violet eyes, the fine detailing helping to increase the realism in them. Dr Marco picked them up and carried them over to the humanoid form laying on his bench. 'She' was almost complete. Four years of blood, sweat, and tears had gone into creating her. Four years of secrecy, hoping against hope that the emperor, Zero, would not find out he was not making weapons for the war effort. Four years of her haunting his dreams, begging to be created. Dr Marco inserted the eyes into their sockets, using his tweezers to connect up the wires and optics that would allow his creation to see the world around it. He stood back, the robotic girl before him was complete. All that remained was to turn her on. Pressing his fingers along the almost invisible seam on her stomach, Dr Marco opened the girl up, revealing the complex machinery inside. Gears, cogs and pumps meshed together, linked to a miniature two-part boiler that fulfilled the role of her stomach. It was an impressive engine. The girl would be able to eat and drink, the solids acting as fuel to be burnt so that the liquids could boil and provide steam, powering her moving parts. And all of it fired by her hair, long fine monofilament wires, which would absorb energy from her surroundings. She was an intricate work of engineering art. Dr Marco unclipped the boiler from it's position in the robot's body cavity and removed it. Holding it up, the doctor poured in a measured amount of water to the top section before placing a few lumps of mulched vegetable matter to the meshed bottom part. He checked his calculations, weighing the total mass of the boiler. It was important not to have too much fuel inside his creation when he activated her, reducing the risk of catastrophic failure in the off chance something went wrong. Satisfied, Dr Marco replaced the robot's 'stomach' and took a deep breath.
"Please let this work."
Dr Marco turned his attention to his Tesla coil, set up to provide the initial jolt, and activated it. A hum filled the air, and the robot's hair started to stand on end. A spark flashed, arcing from the coil to the robot. The fine monofilament wires did their job, absorbing the energy. Quickly, Dr Marco looked into the body cavity. Beneath the boiler a small neon-bright light sparked, and a flame ignited, licking through the mesh to eat at the vegetable matter, consuming it. The flames grew bigger. Slowly but surely the boiler's top part heated up, and a micro gauge showed the pressure inside it rising. Steam escaped through a valve, causing a piston to shift, and turn a cog. In a domino effect, that one movement caused another, and then another. More gears clicked into action, and turned. More pistons reacting and pumping, turning flywheels and winding up coiled springs. Slowly his creation came to life. Dr Marco closed the robot and buttoned up her clothes. He watched and waited. The eyes began to flicker, a light shining deep withing them, and the robot girl moved. She looked at him, and tried to sit up. Dr Marco helped her, taking her hand gently.
"That's it, easy now," he said. "Take your time."
The girl looked around, a puzzled look on her face.
"Where... Am... I?" she asked, her voice sounding feminine thanks to a beautiful miniature music box implanted in her larynx.
"You're home," Dr Marco said.
"Home?"
"How do you feel?" the doctor asked.
The robot cocked her head slightly, considering the question as she accessed the information Dr Marco had programmed in her cogitators.
"Why should I feel?" she answered.
Dr Marco frowned, taken back by the response.
"What do you mean?"
"Why should I feel?" she repeated. "I am not like you. I am not human. Am I a tool or a weapon?"
She looked at her hands, studying them as though contemplating her potential weapon applications. Dr Marco's heart skipped a beat. This was not what he had planned. He had to think quickly.
"No, you're not a weapon," he said. "You're my daughter."
"Your daughter?"
She looked at Dr Marco, frowning.
"How can that be? We are not the same."
Dr Marco chewed his bottom lip. He had to convince her she was not, and could never be a weapon.
"You must believe me," he said, looking into her violet eyes. "It's complicated, but we are the same. You are my daughter."
He smiled at her, stroking her cheek.
"There was an accident, and you were badly hurt. I tried to do what I could for you and make you whole again. You were in a coma for so long though. I'm afraid it's affected your memories."
The girl looked down, her face showing the confusion she felt.
"What is my name?"
Dr Marco gently raised her head, making her look him in the eyes.
"Your name, your old name, isn't important anymore. Our old life is over. It's time we started anew."
He thought for a moment before continuing on.
"Titania. That can be your new name."
"Titania?"
The doctor nodded.
"Titania. Because you were so strong during such an accident, it was as if you were made of titanium."
He hugged her. Titania paused, and slowly hugged him back. Dr Marco felt a flood of emotions run through him. Titania was new. Special. She had come to him in a dream, and he had brought her to life. She was his creation, and yet, he knew she would be so much more. She was his daughter, and nothing would ever change that. Softly her voice reached his ears.
"Father."
A tear run down his cheek as she accepted his truth.
"Titania, my beloved daughter. Welcome home."
Dr Marco glanced across at the calender on his wall, noting the date: May 23, in the year 2123, during the reign of Emperor Zero. Titania was born...
A writing prompt/challenge from :iconsonicinterface:
Chose a character with an established/known past, and write a story on one of the events from it.
I was going to use Wolfen, but with :iconsonicinterface:'s encouragement/suggestion to use a character from someone else, I chose Titania/Dr Marco from :iconasiatheanimator:'s stable.
