Sel-Mei lay on the floor, resting on her stomach. She stared at the infant before her, the child's eyes wide as it looked at it's mother. Slowly the toddler tilted it's head to the side and blinked. Sel-Mei jumped up, crying out in joy.
"I win! I win! I told you I'd win!"
The Junior Corporal laughed, giggling wildly as she looked down at the child. She frowned in a curious way, her mind fuzzy.
"Who are you anyway?" she asked. "You're not Mary's. Are you one of June's?"
Sel-Mei scratched her head as she pondered the question.
"No, wrong colour and not squishy enough."
She looked around the room as though trying to find something.
"You know, I have a little puggle that looks like you."
The child frowned, frustrated by her mother's inattention. It crawled over and lashed out, biting Sel-Mei on the ankle. The woman looked down again, the bite barely registering. Her eyes widened as she regarded the toddler for what seemed like the first time.
"Yu!" she exclaimed, scooping up the child. "I was just looking for you!"
Sel-Mei danced around, swinging her daughter happily.
"What were you doing down there? Shouldn't you be with your father?"
Sel-Mei paused.
"Where is Malus anyway? Let's go find him, Yu."
Bouncing and nuzzling her daughter, Sel-Mei danced off, her muddled mind focused on it's new mission. In her arms, Yu-Mei giggled, enjoying the sudden burst of attention from her mother.

The darkness was all around. It closed in, smothering and cold. Malus shivered. It wasn't a darkness he liked. It was in his mind. In his soul. It was a black cloud that made it hard to breathe, hard to think, and hard to function. The echidna groaned. His breaths came in short, sharp gasps, and his chest hurt. It almost felt like a tank had been parked on top of it. Malus slumped to the floor, hugging his knees as he hid in the blackened-out supply room. He was trying to hide, but he knew he couldn't hide from the depression that built up within him. Slowly his thoughts dimmed and blurred, the pain withing making it hard to think straight. Vaguely he wished Sel-Mei was here. His lover, and the mother of his daughter, was perhaps the only one, his sister aside, who could help pull him out of the eternal abyss from which he was falling. Malus gasped, rocking himself as a whimper escaped his lips. He shook violently, losing control of his body. The darkness was all consuming, and the echidna felt as though there was no way out. He was falling, and it felt like he would fall forever.

"We're going to hunt for Mally. We're going to find your Daddy!"
Sel-Mei hurried down the corridor, her daughter laughing hysterically from her mother's singing and dancing. It was the most attention Sel-Mei had shown Yu-Mei for a long time, and both were having a good time. Sel-Mei stopped in her tracks, blinking as she watched two figures approach. They looked hot and sweaty, obviously having just returned to base from some sort of strenuous activity. Sel-Mei giggled manically, nuzzling her daughter and tickled the toddler's belly.
"Watch this," she whispered sharply to Yu-Mei. "This is how mommy likes to have fun. You'll enjoy this, Yu."
The echidna quickly ran up to the figures, blocking their path. She called out loudly, her voice taking on a sing-song tone.
"Bullet and Kiara, sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G! First comes the Soultouch. Then comes marriage. Then comes Bully with a baby carriage!"
Sel-Mei burst out laughing, earning a fierce growl and a disapproving glare from the two officers. They tried to push past, but Sel-Mei cut them off.
"What do you want, Sel?" Bullet snarled.
"Just looking for Mally," Sel-Mei replied. "Where have you and Kiara been?"
She gasped.
"Have you been making puggles? Kiara, did Bully finally do the deed? We gotta have a baby shower!"
Kiara-Ne hissed.
"Be quiet, Sel! I am NOT pregnant! We were only on a training mission."
Sel-Mei looked at the child in her arms, winking.
"Rrrright! Training!"
Bullet growled.
"Just get out of here, Sel. Go find someone else to bug."
Sel-Mei frowned.
"I would but I can't find Mally."
"Try the supply room," Bullet snarled with a shake of his head. "Cali says he often goes in there to sulk."
Sel-Mei perked up. Without warning she thrust her daughter into Bullet's arms.
"Thanks, Bully. Here, hold this for me!"
Quickly she hurried off before either officer could respond, leaving them stuck with the toddler. Yu-Mei frowned, her bottom lip quivering as her mother abandoned her again. She looked up at Bullet, the Lieutenant glancing down at her. The puggle's nose wrinkled and she struck, biting Bullet hard on the hand.

The voices in the back of Malus' head whispered to him. Taunting him. He struggled to breathe, and knew that if he couldn't regain control soon, he very well might pass out.
So what? the voices said. If you pass out, you won't have to feel the pain anymore. If you're lucky, you might never wake up again. You'll be free of the pain. Just let go...
Malus whimpered. His vision greyed and his head spun. He could feel his heart racing in his chest, and his blood rushing through his veins. Nothing was going to save him. Dimly he heard more voices, but dismissed them, not wanting to hear their taunts. It wasn't until the harsh light of the corridor broke into the supply room, that Malus realized the voices were from another source. He looked up, and saw a person in the doorway, their lean and wiry figure almost boyish in shape. The voice called out again.
"Mally? You in here?"
Sel-Mei! She was here. She had come to pull him out of the darkness. Malus tried to call back, but his voice stuck in his throat.
"Sssel."
Panic struck the depressed echidna as he watched Sel-Mei turn back, seemingly about to leave. He closed his eyes and groaned. Suddenly something struck Malus hard, and he rolled along the ground, his body becoming entwined with another.
"MALLY!"
Lips clamped around his as Sel-Mei glomped him and nuzzled her face into his fur. She sat up, pulling him in close.
"Found you, Mally. Why were you hiding in here?"
Malus tried to answer, but couldn't, his voice still hoarse. It didn't matter though. Sel-Mei looked deep into his eyes, and Malus saw a clarity enter them. A rare moment of lucidity and understanding came over her, and she smiled. It was perhaps the most beautiful thing Malus had seen. Tenderly Sel-Mei took his head in her arms, holding it against her chest. She rocked, cooing softly.
"Shhh, there there, baby. Sel's here to make the bad go away. Shhh."
Malus allowed himself to melt into her embrace, the feel of her body against his the balm he needed. The moment seemed to stretch, and then without warning, Malus found himself thrown onto his back. Sel-Mei pinned him down, grinning manically as the clarity in her mind wore off, the fuzziness returning to it's crazy best. She nuzzled him again, her voice purring with obvious intent.
"Hey, Mally," she giggled. "I just realized what today is."
Sel-Mei began to kiss her lover all over the face and chest, her amour growing by the second.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Mally."
Malus smiled, Sel-Mei's infectious nature bringing him out of the dark, and he managed a soft whisper.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Sel...
